Keith Law’s 2018 top 100 prospects: Nos. 50-1
If you’re not going for it in today’s MLB environment, you’re — well, let’s not say tanking and just go with developing. Teams that build from their farm system, through the draft, the international market and trades of veterans for prospects, keep reaching and winning the World Series. The Royals had the No. 1 farm system in baseball in 2011 and won two pennants, including a world championship in 2015. The Cubs hit the top five in 2013, ranked No. 1 in 2015 and won the World Series in 2016. The Astros had the No. 1 farm system in baseball in 2014 and won their first title in 2017.
Ball injured his knee late in an overtime victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 13. He woke up the next morning with pain and swelling in his knee. He was able to walk and jog on a treadmill on Saturday during the Lakers’ off day, but the team wants to play it safe and see the No. 2 overall pick be able to clear a few hurdles before returning to practice to test the knee.
The Lakers are 2-8 when Ball does not play. He missed six games earlier this season because of a shoulder injury.
Listen, the mistake I made that night was letting my emotions get the best of me, Payton said during a conference call with Falcons reporters, per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
In the same game, Payton was fined $10,000 by the NFL for improperly entering the playing field during the game. He explained after the loss what led to that decision, saying: I called a timeout, and then [the referee] asked me again and I said I’ve already called the timeout. Probably said it with a little bit more vigor than I was supposed to, but I had enough. I have to be smarter than that.
With New Orleans (10-4) locked atop the NFC South with Carolina, Sunday’s rematch with Atlanta looms as a doozy. Sticking to coaching his players would be a wise plan for Payton this time around.
Kea scores 36, Tar Heel women upset No. 15 Duke 92-86 in OT
Paris Kea scored a career-high 36 points, including a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left that sent the game into overtime, and North Carolina ended a seven-game losing streak against bitter rival Duke, defeating the 15th-ranked Blue Devils 92-86 on Sunday.
North Carolina closed the fourth quarter making 5 of 6 shots and went 5 of 6 in OT. Kea and Church each had five 3s and UNC had 13 triples.
Duke went 5 of 11 in OT, but finished 1 of 6. The Blue Devils were also 2 of 6 from the line in the last 65 seconds of regulation.
Haley Gorecki scored a career-high 29 points for Duke (15-5, 4-3) and Lexie Brown had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Yori, who played at Creighton and was the Bluejays’ head coach from 1992 to 2002, saw her successful 14-year run at Nebraska end two years ago amid accusations of player mistreatment. She denied any wrongdoing and resigned.
She’ll be a program adviser at Creighton, helping develop game strategy, scout opponents and participate in on-campus recruiting.
Creighton is my roots, Yori said. I spent 17 years here, and I’m so proud to be a Creighton alum and always have been. It was hard to leave here, and I am happy to be back helping my alma mater. This is a minor role in a really good program, and it’ll be fun to rejoin the Creighton family.
Yori was the consensus national coach of the year in 2010 after Nebraska went 32-2 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. She had a 280-166 record with nine trips to the NCAA tournament with the Cornhuskers.
With Kidd out, will the Bucks and Giannis reach their peak?
The Milwaukee Bucks have one of the league’s most versatile defenders in long-armed, 6-foot-11 Giannis Antetokounmpo, a premier shot blocker in center John Henson and a quality perimeter defender in point guard Eric Bledsoe from a November trade — and yet they woke up Monday morning ranked 25th in the NBA in defensive rating.
That defensive weakness, among other factors, probably cost Jason Kidd his job as head coach of the Bucks. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday afternoon that Kidd is out, which the team officially announced shortly thereafter.
The aspect of Bryant’s underwhelming 2017 that has received the most scrutiny is his number of drops (6), which tied for fifth-most in the league and drew the ire of Cowboys fans on multiple occasions. None was bigger than the short pass that glanced off Bryant’s hands — a fastball lacking the necessary touch from Prescott — and was intercepted by a Seattle defender in a game that ruined Dallas’ postseason chances.
Friday Flashback: NBA All-Star Game uniform design has bounced all over the place, like a Larry Bird shot in a game of H-O-R-S-E. Paul Lukas explores the history of the showcase game’s uniforms.
For the past 15 years the league has stuck to the traditional format of the Eastern Conference All-Stars wearing blue or blue-trimmed uniforms, and their Western Conference counterparts wearing red. But for this season’s All-Star Game, which is scheduled to be played on Feb. 18 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the league has scrapped the East versus West format in favor of a draft-style system with two team captains choosing the rosters. It appears the new uniforms will feature one team in black and the other in white, with all players wearing black-and-white versions of their regular team logos on their jersey chests.
