NBA wrap: New-look Cavaliers trounce Celtics in Boston

The Cavaliers featured a number of new players Sunday after making noise on Thursday’s trade deadline, and if their debuts were any indication, Cleveland is going to be tough to beat moving forward.

Cleveland marched into Boston and handed the Celtics a 121-99 loss. LeBron James led the Cavs with 24 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, but seven Cavs recorded at least 10 points.

George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr. and Rodney Hood all made their Cavs debuts Sunday. Hill started at point guard, scoring 12 points with three rebounds. Clarkson added 17 points off the bench, and Hood scored 15 points.

Pistons point guard Ish Smith scored just two points with seven assists and five turnovers in 29 minutes of action in a 118-115 loss to the Hawks. The streaky Pistons have now lost two straight games after winning five in a row.

Spurs (35-22) at Jazz (27-28) 9:00 p.m. ET Utah has rattled off eight straight wins thanks to point guard Ricky Rubio’s torrid stretch. Rubio has been scoring at an elite rate during the winning streak, while still dishing out assists and grabbing rebounds. The Spurs continue to win despite racking up an alarming amount of injuries.

I think the Cavs are really weighing how much, if at all, do we give up, do we cut into our future assets, whether it’s (the Nets) draft pick, even their own pick, which has been readily available, their own 2018 pick, not the Nets’ pick, do they do that even? Adrian Wojnarowski said Monday on the The Lowe Post podcast. Anything that short circuits the rebuild that I think they feel pretty confident is going to coming here based on how this has gone, how much do they want to do to mortgage any of their future, I get not doing the Nets’ pick but why even trade their own pick?

The Cavs have lost six of their last 10 games, including their last two Saturday primetime games by an average of 28 points, and are now just 1/2 game up on the Wizards for third place in the Eastern Conference.

Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong over the last few weeks for the Cavaliers and they are understandably looking to the future. They would love to make a trade happen in the now, but it simply appears the assets they have beyond draft picks cannot get a game-changing move done.
